Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Macro Lens for Nikon DSLRCustomer Review: A little wonder of a lens Summary: 5 Stars
I've been looking for some time now for a good standard-range DX-format zoom lens, and this may be it.
This is a sharp, well-constructed, fast (f/2.8) little lens with very quick and silent autofocus. The closeup (macro) feature is amazing (I uploaded a few samples). Granted, it's not the same as a dedicated 1:1 macro, but having 1:3 available whenever you have this zoom attached allows you to capture those type of shots at a moment's notice.
Other fast, normal lenses I considered:
* Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 -- additional range, but more than 3x the price, no macro
* Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 -- extra one mm, but no macro, didn't feel as well-built, noisy AF
* Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 -- extra range on wide end, but 25% more expensive and no macro
* Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS -- OS and extra one mm, but no macro
* Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS Macro -- OS, extra 20mm on tele end, but...
the additional tele range isn't *that* much more (zoom from 50 to 70 on a lens that includes that range and see). Also, this lens has a variable aperture unlike the constant f/2.8 of the 18-50
Another reason that discouraged me from Sigma's OS lenses (I know this is the case with the 17-70, not sure about the 17-50): unlike Nikon's VR implementation, in which the VR turns off when you take your finger off the shutter, Sigma's OS remains on for one minute after the camera's meter turns off -- this severely impacts battery life. Less important, unlike with it's own VR lenses, Nikon's metadata always reports "VR On" with a Sigma OS lens attached, whether or not the OS feature is on.
To summarize, this is a great little standard zoom that lets in a ton of light giving you lots of creative flexibility. The fact that it has macro / closeup capability is just icing on the cake. At this price, it's a bargain. Get one, try it out, and judge the results for yourself.
Description of Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Macro Lens for Nikon DSLR18-50mm F2.8 EX DC AF HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLRs NOTE: This HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) lens is available for Nikon Mount Only and is capable of autofocusing with all Nikon DSLR cameras. The Sigma Super Wide Angle Zoom 18-50mm lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 over its entire range of focal lengths and its large depth of field offers greater freedom of creative expression. This lens is perfectly suited for low light conditions indoors or at dusk. It covers wide angle to medium telephoto and is ideally suited to a wide range of subjects. It is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor. The characteristics of digital SLR cameras were taken into consideration when designing the lens power layout. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass lens element provides effective compensation for lateral chromatic aberration, which is likely to occur with digital SLR cameras. The use of two aspherical lens elements provides correction for various aberrations and makes high quality images a reality throughout the entire zoom range.A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) lens and two aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. The design produces a compact and lightweight, yet robust, construction with an overall length of 84.1mm (3.3in.) and maximum diameter of 74.1mm (2.9in.) and weight of 445g (15.7oz).Super Multi Layer (SML) coating gives the best color balance and reduces flare and ghosting from which digital cameras tend to suffer. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm (11 in.) throughout the entire zoom range which is very convenient for close-up photography. The lens is equipped with an inner focusing system. The non-rotating front lens element makes the lens suitable for using its petal-type lens hood and circular polarizing filters. This lens has excellent correction for vignetting which is a common problem of large aperture lenses. Its new ... Sigma's 18-50mm EX series macro lens is specially designed for Nikon digital SLR cameras with a minimum focusing distance of 20 cm (7.9 inches), making it suitable for a wide variety of subjects. The lens offers a large aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range, along with a maximum magnification of 1:3 for close-up macro photography. The interior, meanwhile, incorporates both glass-mold and hybrid aspherical lens technology to deliver superior peripheral brightness and extremely high image quality. Add in Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ESD) glass elements and you have a lens that can correct all types of color aberrations while providing a high level of optical performance at every interval. The lens also offers a super multilayer lens coating that reduces flare and ghosting, a common problem among many digital cameras. Users will also appreciate the inner focusing system, which provides a fast autofocus speed while preventing the front of the lens from rotating, making it particularly suitable for use with circular polarizing filters and the petal-shaped lens hood (included). The Sigma 18-50mm lens--which measures 3.1 inches in diameter and 3.4 inches long--weighs only 15.9 ounces and carries a one-year warranty.
