Customer Review: Sigma Supremo!

I have had this lens for a month now and would like to share my thoughts with prospective buyers.
Image quality (5.0/5.0): I consistently obtain sharp images from this lens even at its widest aperture. It produces good color saturation, but I must say that the balance is slightly on the warm side. Bokeh is gentle. Vignetting on my Canon EOS 60D is negligible; it is a DG lens after all. I have not observed any aberrations or flares.
Build quality (3.5/5.0): The lens is well built, and I love the matte black finish. Its focus ring turns smoothly, and the AF-MF switch feels solid. Autofocus is accurate but is neither fast nor silent. (To be fair, most people focus manually at or near 1:1 magnification.) There is a focus-limiter switch, which can help reduce the amount of focus hunting. Note that the lens does not have true internal focusing, which means that the front element will get very close to the subject during macro work. The depth-of-field scale with the f/32 bracket is pretty much useless. The lens comes with a hood, which is useful but also annoying as it does not accept the cap. (Why, Sigma, why?)
Price and use (5.0/5.0): At around $300, this lens is good value given its excellent image quality. That I would be able to use it on full-frame bodies--if I could afford one in the future--makes it even more attractive. In addition to macro, the lens is also useful for portrait. You will probably need a wider lens for landscape.
Conclusion: I love this lens and consider it a good purchase. I think that a 4.5 rating would have been more accurate considering a few minor shortcomings. A 5.0 rating is not undeserving, though.

Super Multi Coating reduces flare and ghosting that tends to occur when using digital SLR cameras.Sigma launched its first standard 50mm macro lens in 1990, and followed it up with an improved model in 1998. The advent of digital SLR cameras, however, required updated optical technology and a better imaging performance. Enter the latest incarnation of the 50mm macro lens, with an improved design that corrects for various aberrations. Designed exclusively for Canon SLR cameras, this macro lens is specially coated to get the best possible color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens also includes a floating focusing system, which allows you to precisely photograph objects throughout the entire focusing range. Most importantly, this standard macro lens makes it possible to enjoy better communication with your subject. When viewing through the camera's finder, you'll be able to move the subject and make precise adjustments. For example, the lens offers a close working distance of 7.4 inches, making it extremely convenient to take close-up pictures of a fossil or other inanimate objects.
